1. In 1855, the Nisqually Tribe held the first Treaty of Medicine Creek in modern-day Yelm. This treaty was the first of its kind negotiated between the Nisqually Tribe and the United States government, and it established the Nisqually Reservation.
2. On June 5, 1895, a massive wildfire started in Yelm and spread quickly across Thurston County, burning over 130,000 acres and destroying hundreds of homes.
3. The Yelm Post Office was established in 1891 and is still in operation today.
4. On April 1, 1897, Yelm officially became a town with a population of 150 people.
5. In the early 1900s, Yelm became home to a large Japanese immigrant population who worked in the area's lumber mills and farms.
