.Manitowoc County, located on the western shore of Lake Michigan in the great state of Wisconsin, was established in 1836 and officially organized in 1848. The name "Manitowoc" comes from the Native American Ojibwe language that roughly translates to "land of the good spirit."
Manitowoc County's early settlement began with French fur traders, who established trading posts in the area. Throughout the 19th century, the region witnessed a significant influx of German, Czech, and Irish immigrants. Lumbering, shipbuilding, and agriculture were the primary industries in the late 1800s, which helped shape the county's economy. To this day, agriculture remains a vital part of Manitowoc County's economic portfolio.
One of the most notable moments in the county's history occurred during World War II when Manitowoc contributed greatly to the war effort by constructing submarines that were subsequently launched into Lake Michigan. The Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company built 28 submarines, in total, earning the city's nickname, "The Submarine Capital of the West".
A fun fact about Manitowoc County is that it's home to the West of the Lake Gardens, a unique and striking 6-acre garden paradise created by Ruth St. John and John Dunham West.
