My maternal ancestors were pioneers who came to Boulder county in 1860 in a covered wagon! I was born in Venezuela and came to Boulder in the summer of 1960 when I was 9 and had the incredibly good fortune to grow up in a Boulder that was like the cover of a Saturday Evening Post magazine!

After graduating from Boulder High in I worked my 'high school' gas station job, then a year and a half as an orderly in a rehabilitation center in Denver. And from 1973 to 1980 I worked for the City of Boulder. The first 5 years for the Parks department on tree trimming and parks maintenance crews, then maintaining the Pearl St. Mall during the last months of construction and the first year after its completion. My last 2 years at the City I worked for the Transportation department inspecting traffic signal installations and assisting with signal maintenance. I'm very familiar with what it takes to earn a living pumping gas and mounting tires, caring for frail older people, and outdoors with a shovel, mower or chainsaw!

By the spring of 1980 my wife and I had 2 young children and I made the decision that I needed a job change to better support my growing family. So I got my real estate license and quit the City of Boulder just as a severe economic downturn was starting that would last most of the 1980's and see mortgage interest rates climb to over 18%! It was a VERY tough market to start a real estate career in but surviving it gave me priceless experience. The lesson: whether the market is terrific or depressed, don't assume it will stay that way - it probably wont. Just do my job.

Early in 1982, having been in the business less than 2 years, I was invited to join one of the top real estate firms in Boulder and Colorado and spent the next 19 years there. But by 2001, I could see that computers, the internet, digital photography and cellphones were changing the world, so I decided to go out on my own, make use of the new technology and that's what I've done for the past 20 years - no regrets!

At this point in my career I try to work only with sellers - the only exception would be buyers for my listings. And I'm very committed to two ideas: 1) owning a home is fundamental to feeling secure and attaining financial stability, and 2) I can charge much less, provide excellent service and feel that I'm very fairly compensated for what I do.
