Buying a house is like buying a CD. Chad Budge


In 2014, I moved to Wyoming to serve at Grand Teton National Park. Years of military service and travels included living in eight different states. It was time to identify a place that I could truly call home. After my third day of ranger service, I proceeded to Jackson and formally established residency in Wyoming.

Located in Teton County, Jackson is a town characterized by friendly and helpful citizens. Its medical center is rated best for health care in Wyoming (and among the top 100 facilities nationwide). Impressive schools. A modern library. Dozens of locally owned stores. An in-town ski resort. The list goes on and on.

But locating a home in Jackson can be challenging. Enter Chad Budge.

Chad hails from a family lineage with ties to the first citizens to homestead in Jackson. Indeed, one of the streets in town is identified as Budge Drive. Having lived his entire life in Jackson, and as a graduate of the University of Wyoming, Chad is well known and respected in the real estate profession.

I had never purchased a home until July 2018. Home ownership is a dream for many people living in America. I wanted to join those ranks of homeowners too. But the process can be perplexing, even intimidating. Especially for first time buyers. Chad made the entire process a most positive experience. It was neither perplexing nor intimidating. Rather, I would define my experience as rewarding.

Chad was the consummate real estate professional. He understood that as a first time buyer, I would naturally have concerns and questions. During the initial walk-through of the house, he was careful to explain all of its features. Over the course of four hours in his office, he patiently explained each paragraph of the contract in understandable terms. He recommended a building inspector who previously surveyed the house in 2006. Chad coordinated meetings with local professionals who conducted title searches, escrow services, and financing options. I always felt most reassured and comfortable with every recommendation that he had made during each step of the home purchase. Indeed, the entire process between touring the home and formal closing was a mere three weeks.

While working with Chad, I concluded that buying a house is like buying a CD. The process simply reduced to transferring paper assets to a physical asset. Moreover, historical real estate data show that a home purchase in Jackson will likely appreciate at a much higher rate of return that any CD. The advice shared by Chad is wisdom that I occasionally revisit when I open my front door.
