One significant historical event in the Anchorage area was the 1964 Great Alaska Earthquake. The earthquake, which measured 9.2 on the Richter scale, remains the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in North America. The earthquake caused widespread destruction throughout Anchorage and other areas of Southcentral Alaska, including landslides, tsunamis, and liquefaction. The disaster resulted in the deaths of 131 people across the state and caused more than $300 million in damage. Today, the earthquake serves as a reminder of the power of nature and the importance of earthquake preparedness in Alaska.
