Fairbanks North Star Borough is a region located in the interior of the great state of Alaska, USA. Established on January 1, 1964, the borough encompasses an area of around 7,444 square miles. The largest city in this borough is Fairbanks, which also serves as the borough seat. The Fairbanks North Star Borough came into existence to provide a structured local government to the prospering town of Fairbanks and its surrounding areas.
The region's history can be traced back to the early 20th century when an American trader, E.T. Barnette, set up a trading post along the Chena River in 1901. The following year, an Italian prospector named Felice Pedroni, later known as Felix Pedro, discovered gold about 12 miles north of Barnette's trading post. This discovery ushered in a gold rush era for Fairbanks, which was named after Charles W. Fairbanks, a senator from Indiana and later Vice President of the United States under Theodore Roosevelt.
Throughout the years, the economy of Fairbanks North Star Borough has diversified from its initial gold mining foundation. The military, transportation, oil industry, and tourism sectors have contributed significantly to the area's growth.
A fun fact about this region is that Fairbanks - known as the "Golden Heart City" - is one of the best places in the world to witness the breathtaking phenomenon, the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. The city's location under the "Auroral Oval" makes it an ideal spot to enjoy this magnificent natural light show that occurs predominantly during cold winter months from September to March.
