Matanuska-Susitna Borough, also known as "Mat-Su," is located in the south-central part of Alaska, in the United States. Covering an area of approximately 25,258 square miles, it is the third-largest borough in the state. With its seat in the city of Palmer, Mat-Su stretches from the Matanuska and Susitna Rivers to the Alaska Range and Talkeetna Mountains.
The historical background of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough can be traced back to the indigenous Athabascan peoples who have inhabited the region of Alaska for thousands of years. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, gold prospectors, coal miners, and trappers ventured into this area, spurring further exploration and settlement.
Matanuska-Susitna Borough was officially established on January 1, 1964, upon the passing of the Alaska Statehood Act in 1959 when Alaska became the 49th state of the USA. Today, the borough is known for its agricultural, fishing, and tourism industries, as well as oil and gas exploration and development.
One fun fact about the Mat-Su region includes the Matanuska Valley Colony, a New Deal project initiated in 1935 by the U.S. government. To help struggling families during the Great Depression, the government relocated 203 families from the Midwestern and Northern United States to this area to form an agricultural colony. Many of these colonists were provided with a house, barn, and supplies to farm the fertile lands of the valley. The settlement is considered to be one of Alaska's most significant agricultural centers, and the region still celebrates its roots with the annual Alaska State Fair in Palmer.
