Yakutat Borough is a borough located in the U.S. state of Alaska. Covering an area of 9,463 square miles, it is situated on the Gulf of Alaska, bordering Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve to the southeast. Yakutat is one of the largest municipalities in the United States by land area.
The region has a rich cultural history, dating back to prehistoric times. It was initially inhabited by the indigenous Tlingit people, who referred to the area as "Yakutat," meaning "the place where the canoes rest." The Yakutat Tlingits are a distinct tribe, known for their unique culture and customs, which they have preserved to this day.
In the 18th century, Russian explorers arrived in the area, attracted by its rich resources of fur and fish. In 1795, the Russians established a trading post in Yakutat, which lasted until the early 19th century. By the mid-19th century, American traders made their presence known, and the Hudson's Bay Company built a trading post, named "Fort Selkirk," which operated until 1852.
During World War II, Yakutat played a significant role as a military strategic point. In 1942, the Yakutat Airport was built by the U.S. Army Air Corps to protect the region and support the "Lend Lease" program, which supplied aircraft to the USSR through the Alaskan-Siberian air route.
Yakutat Borough was officially established on September 22, 1992. The region now supports an economy with a mix of fishing, tourism, and timber. Outdoor recreational opportunities abound in Yakutat, including fishing, hunting, bird-watching, surfing, and exploring the nearby glaciers.
Fun fact: Yakutat is home to the Hubbard Glacier, the largest tidewater glacier in North America. This glacier spans around 76 miles from its source in the Yukon to Disenchantment Bay at the Gulf of Alaska. It is nicknamed the "Galloping Glacier" because of its rapid movement and is also acknowledged for its regular and dramatic ice calving events.
