Colbert County is located in the northwestern part of the state of Alabama and was created on February 6, 1867, as one of the 67 counties in the state. It was named after brothers George and Levi Colbert, who were Chickasaw Indian chiefs. The county is part of the Florence-Muscle Shoals Metropolitan Area, also known as "The Shoals."

The area that is now Colbert County was originally inhabited by native tribes, including the Chickasaw and Cherokee. European settlers began moving into the region in the 18th century. After the Chickasaw Cession in 1816, more settlers poured into the area as land became available.

Some significant historical events took place in Colbert County, such as General Andrew Jackson's encampment at the site known as "Jackson's Military Road" during the Creek War in 1813. The area also played a role in the development of the Tennessee River and river transportation with the construction of vital locks and dams in the early 20th century.

A significant part of the county's history is the development of the Muscle Shoals area, which started as a small agricultural community in the 19th century. In the early 20th century, it transformed into an industrial powerhouse, and by the 1960s, it became a hub for musical recording and production, earning the nickname "The Hit Recording Capital of the World."

One fun fact about Colbert County is its connection to the music industry. It is home to the famous Muscle Shoals Sound Studio and FAME Studios, where renowned artists like Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, The Rolling Stones, and Lynyrd Skynyrd recorded some of their iconic songs, putting Colbert County on the map as a significant contributor to the American music scene.
