Henry County is located in the southeastern part of Alabama and was created on December 13, 1819, by an act of the Alabama Territorial General Assembly. The county was named in honor of Patrick Henry, a Virginia statesman and a Founding Father of the United States, who is well-known for his "Give me liberty, or give me death!" speech. The county originally encompassed a larger area but was reduced in size as new counties were established in the region, like Barbour County in 1832 and Houston County in 1903.

Abbeville is the county seat of Henry County and is known for its beautiful courthouse, constructed in 1889, and notable architecture like the Seth Lore and Irwinton Historic District. The county is largely rural, with agriculture being one of the main contributing factors to the economy. Historically, agriculture has focused on crops such as cotton, peanuts, and soybeans, in addition to poultry and cattle farming.

A fun fact about Henry County is that it is home to a large population of gopher tortoises, a keystone species native to the southeastern United States. The county takes pride in conserving these animals, which have a significant impact on the local ecosystem, as they create burrows that provide shelter for more than 350 other species. Gopher tortoises are even featured on the Henry County courthouse mural, a testament to the county's commitment to preserving its unique natural environment.
