Marengo County is located in the southwestern part of the great state of Alabama. Established on February 6th, 1818, it was one of the original counties formed during the state's territorial period when Alabama was still part of the Mississippi Territory. Marengo County's creation followed the defeat of the Creek Nation at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, which opened up large amounts of land for white settlement. The county was named after the Battle of Marengo, fought in 1800 at Marengo, Italy, where French General Napoleon Bonaparte emerged victorious over the Austrians.

The county seat is Linden, while Demopolis is the largest city within Marengo County. The early settlers of the area were primarily plantation owners who cultivated cotton, thanks to the fertile soil provided by the Black Belt region. As a result, the county's economy relied heavily on slave labor before the Civil War.

A fun fact about Marengo County is that it is home to Gaineswood, a National Historic Landmark. Gaineswood is a distinctive Greek Revival antebellum mansion, built between 1843 and 1861 by General Nathan Bryan Whitfield. The mansion stands as a testament to the elegance and grandeur of the antebellum era in Alabama and serves as a reminder of the county's rich history.
