Marshall County, Alabama
.Marshall County, located in the northeastern region of the great state of Alabama, was established on January 9, 1836. It was named in honor of John Marshall, a prominent American statesman and the fourth Chief Justice of the United States. The county's original territory was carved out of lands once belonging to the Cherokee and Chickasaw tribes, who were eventually removed by the federal government as part of the Indian Removal Act of 1830.
The first settlers of Marshall County were mainly farmers who cultivated cotton, corn, and other crops. The county seat, Guntersville, was named after an early landowner, John Gunter, and was incorporated in 1848. Guntersville is now a thriving town that sits on the banks of Guntersville Lake, which was formed by the construction of the Guntersville Dam, completed in 1939.
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), a federally-owned corporation in the United States, played a significant role in Marshall County's development during the 20th century. Apart from the construction of the Guntersville Dam, the TVA brought electricity and improved infrastructure to the county, which led to the growth of industries, commerce, and agriculture.
Throughout its history, Marshall County has been home to notable individuals such as Albertville native and famous landscape architect, Nimrod E. Long, who had a massive influence on the design and aesthetics of the University of Alabama campus.
