Russell County, Alabama
.Russell County is located in the southeastern part of the state of Alabama, United States, and has a rich historical background. The area was originally inhabited by the Creek Indians before the arrival of European settlers. The county was created on December 18, 1832, from the lands ceded to the US by the Creek Nation through the Treaty of Cusseta (1832).
One of the most significant historical events in the county was the establishment of Fort Mitchell in 1813. The fort played a crucial role during the Creek War (1813-1814) and later served as a supply point for troops during the Second Seminole War and the removal of Native Americans to Indian Territory. After the end of the Indian wars in Alabama, Russell County became an important agricultural region, with cotton being the primary cash crop. Over the years, the region saw the growth of cities like Phenix City, which became an important center for trade and commerce.
During the Civil War, Confederate soldiers from Russell County fought on various fronts. After the war, the county experienced significant changes during the Reconstruction era. In the 20th century, Phenix City gained a reputation for corruption and lawlessness, earning the nickname "Sin City" due to its rampant gambling, bootlegging, and organized crime activities. The city underwent major reforms in the 1950s, which led to the dismantling of the criminal syndicates.
A fun fact about Russell County is that it was home to the Central of Georgia Railway's "River Queen," a train that ran between Phenix City and Eufaula from 1895 to 1932. The train connected the two cities, carrying goods, passengers, and even local groups such as orchestras, and played a significant role in Russell County's early economic development.
