A fun and verifiable fact about Autaugaville, Alabama is that it was once the site of a historic Civil War battle in 1865. The Battle of Autaugaville saw Confederate forces under General James Hagan fight off Union forces under General Benjamin H. Grierson in a skirmish that took place on April 1, 1865. The battle was notable because it represented one of the last engagements of the Civil War, taking place only a few days before Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant. Today, the historic site is marked with a monument honoring the battle's participants.
