Benton County, Arkansas
.Benton County is located in the northwest corner of Arkansas and was established on September 30, 1836. Named after U.S. Senator Thomas Hart Benton, the county was carved from the larger Washington County as part of the Arkansas Territory. Covering an area of 883 square miles, Benton County is part of the larger Ozarks region and is home to the beautiful Ozark National Forest.
Settlement in the region traces back to the early 1800s, when European-American pioneers first arrived and began establishing homesteads. Osage and Cherokee tribes had already been living in the area for generations. The growing number of settlers contributed to the founding of Bentonville, the county seat, in 1837. The county's population grew steadily throughout the 19th and 20th centuries due in part to its thriving agricultural industry and the development of the railroad system.
By the mid-20th century, Benton County diversified its economy with the establishment of major corporations like Walmart, which was founded by Sam Walton in the city of Rogers in 1962. This corporate presence has contributed to the growth of the county as a commercial and industrial hub.
One fun fact about Benton County is that it hosts the unique Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville. This world-class museum, founded by Walmart heiress Alice Walton in 2011, showcases a remarkable collection of American art from the colonial era to the present day.
