.Craighead County, located in the northeastern part of the great state of Arkansas, was founded on February 19, 1859. Named in honor of brothers Thomas and Jordan Craighead, both of whom were prominent figures in early Arkansas history, the county covers an area of around 713 square miles.
Originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Osage and Quapaw, the area later saw an influx of European settlers during the early 19th century. The county was formed from parts of Greene, Mississippi, and Poinsett Counties following the Treaty of Council Bluffs in 1824, which facilitated the removal of the Quapaw tribe to Indian Territory in present-day Oklahoma.
Jonesboro, the county seat and largest city, was established in 1859 and is today a bustling hub of commerce and education in the region. Agriculture has played a significant role in the county's economy, with cotton being the most important crop during the early days, followed by the introduction of other crops such as soybeans, corn, and rice.
