Drew County is located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Arkansas. Established on November 26, 1846, the county was named after Thomas S. Drew, the third governor of Arkansas who served from 1844 to 1849. Monticello, the largest city in Drew County, was founded in 1849 and serves as the county seat.

The rich soil of the county, combined with its proximity to the delta, provided an abundance of farming opportunities, making agriculture the backbone of the local economy. In the early days, the county mostly produced cotton, corn, and sweet potatoes. The county also had thriving lumber and railroad industries.

Drew County witnessed numerous skirmishes and battles during the Civil War which impacted the lives of local farmers and communities greatly. After the war, former slaves of the county's various plantations helped shape its unique cultural heritage.

A fun fact about Drew County is that it is home to the University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM), founded in 1909 as one of Arkansas's land-grant institutions. UAM boasts a remarkable Agriculture and Forestry program, as well as the only School of Forest Resources in Arkansas, highlighting the county's strong connection with agriculture and natural resources.
