Jackson County is situated in the northeastern part of Arkansas and was established on November 5, 1829. It was named in honor of President Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States. The county seat is Newport, which is also the largest city in the area. Positioned along the White River, Jackson County spans 642 square miles.

The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Quapaw and the Osage. European settlers began to arrive in the area during the 1800s, particularly after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Throughout the 19th century, agricultural production became the primary industry and economic driver in the county, with the fertile lands supporting cotton, rice, and soybean farming.

Jackson County played a role in the American Civil War, with both the Union and Confederate forces engaging in skirmishes and battles in the area. After the Civil War, the county experienced an economic boom, particularly due to the construction of railroads and the development of the timber industry. These advancements led to increased population growth and urbanization.

A fun fact about Jackson County is that a significant archaeological site, the Dunham Mounds, is located in the area. These Native American mounds date back to the late Woodland Period, between 500 and 900 A.D., and provide valuable insight into the history and culture of the indigenous people who once lived in the region.
