Johnson County is located in the great state of Arkansas and was formed on November 16, 1833, from Pope County, which was itself established in 1829. Named in honor of Benjamin Johnson, who worked as a prominent territorial judge, Johnson County covers an area of 683 square miles, with Clarksville as its county seat.

In its early days, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Osage and Caddo, before European settlers arrived in the early 19th century. The region initially relied mainly on agriculture, with crops such as corn, cotton, and soybeans being the primary sources of income. Later, the timber industry, manufacturing, and poultry production also started contributing to Johnson County's economy.

One fun fact about Johnson County is that the county's first courthouse was built in 1834 in a spot known as the "Court House Prairie," using logs for the construction. There is a legend that a bear, which was hiding in a crawlspace beneath the courthouse, interrupted the proceedings of the first court held in the building.
