The county was established on October 15, 1827, as part of the Arkansas Territory, which became a state in 1836. Its county seat is Lewisville. Initially, the region was inhabited by Native American tribes like the Caddo and the Choctaw.

In the early 20th century, the lumber industry prospered significantly in the region.
