Lee County is located in the eastern part of Arkansas and is named in honor of General Robert E. Lee, the Confederate Civil War leader. Established on April 17, 1873, the county was formed from parts of Phillips, Monroe, St. Francis, and Crittenden counties. Marianna serves as the county seat and the largest city within its borders. In its early years, the county's economy primarily relied on agriculture, with cotton being the principal crop. The area also saw significant timber and lumber industries, due to its vast acreage of forests.

The Great Mississippi River Flood of 1927 was a significant event in Lee County's history. The flood caused substantial damage to the county's infrastructure and agriculture, displacing many of its residents.

A fun fact about Lee County is that, in the 1950s, it was home to a unique archaeological discovery. At the Nodena Site near Wilson, Arkansas, the remains of a 15th-century Native American village were excavated. The site, which was likely inhabited by the Mound Builders, provided valuable insights into the lives and culture of the indigenous peoples from that time period. Artifacts discovered at the site include pottery, tools, and various ceremonial items.
