Mississippi County is located in the northeastern part of Arkansas, and it plays a significant role in the state's history. The county was established on November 1, 1833, and was named after the Mississippi River, which serves as its eastern border. The county's boundaries were defined by the Arkansas legislature and mainly covered the land between the St. Francis and Mississippi Rivers.

Before the arrival of European settlers, this region was inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Quapaw, Osage, and Chickasaw. In the 17th and 18th centuries, French and Spanish explorers arrived and established a foothold in the area, proceeding to trade and interact with the local native tribes. After the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the region became a part of the United States and saw an influx of American settlers.

The county has experienced significant economic changes throughout its history. It was primarily an agricultural region with large plantations dedicated to the cultivation of cotton. However, in the early 20th century, the lumber industry boomed in the area, leading to the establishment of sawmills and the growth of several towns.

One fun fact about Mississippi County is that it has been called the "Biodiesel Capital of America" due to its large-scale production of biodiesel fuels. In 2005, a major biodiesel plant was constructed in the county, helping to promote sustainable and renewable energy sources. The plant utilized soybeans, an abundant local crop, as a primary source for biodiesel production.
