Poinsett County, located in the northeastern part of the great state of Arkansas, was established on February 28, 1838. The county was named after Joel R. Poinsett, who was a U.S. Congressman, diplomat, and the first U.S. Minister to Mexico. He was also known for introducing the poinsettia plant to the United States. Poinsett County includes several towns and cities, with the largest city and county seat being Harrisburg.

Poinsett County's early history is closely tied to the expansion of the railroad in the United States. The Cotton Belt and Missouri Pacific rail systems played a significant role in the development of the region. Before the arrival of European settlers, Native American tribes such as the Quapaw and Chickasaw inhabited the area. Agriculture has long been a major industry in Poinsett County, with a focus on cotton production and, more recently, rice and soybean farming.

A fun fact about Poinsett County is that it is home to the southern segment of Crowley's Ridge, a geological formation that stands out as a low and narrow ridge within the Mississippi Alluvial Plains. The elevation of Crowley's Ridge in Poinsett County is approximately 250 feet higher than the surrounding flatlands, providing residents and visitors with a unique landscape for hiking, birdwatching, and other outdoor activities.
