Sebastian County, located in the great state of Arkansas, was established on January 6, 1851, and named after William K. Sebastian, a prominent U.S. Senator from Arkansas. The county is split into two regions with the Arkansas River acting as a dividing line; the southern region is a part of the Ouachita Mountains, while the northern area lies in the Arkansas River Valley. Fort Smith, the county seat and historically a significant military and trading outpost, was established in 1817 near the Arkansas River and rapidly became a crucial location in westward expansion.

Sebastian County played a pivotal role during the Civil War, with several skirmishes taking place in the region. On September 1, 1863, a notable fight occurred at Fort Smith in the Battle of Devil's Backbone, where Union forces successfully defended the city against Confederate forces' attacks.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Sebastian County became pivotal in the coal and railroad industries. Coal mining boomed in the area, employing thousands of workers and supplying energy for local and regional consumption. The growth of the rail system further enhanced the county's economy and expansion.
