- McNary is a small census-designated place (CDP) located on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation.
- The community was named after J.C. McNary, who was a prominent lumberman and a shareholder in Southwest Lumber Mills.

- The town was established in the early 1920s as a sawmill town to support the nearby timber industry. At its peak, it was home to over 5,000 people.
- In the 1930s, the federal government constructed a dam and reservoir in the area to help manage the White River Watershed. This project created jobs and brought economic growth to the area.
