Tonto Basin is a small village located in the Gila County of Arizona state in the United States. The village is situated at the intersection of State Route 188 and State Route 288, and its nearest town is Payson, which is about 25 miles north. Tonto Basin is nestled along the banks of the Tonto Creek and surrounded by the Tonto National Forest.
Historically, Tonto Basin was inhabited by the Tonto Apache tribe, who led a traditional way of life based on hunting, fishing, and agriculture. Today, the village has a population of around 1,500 people and is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, thanks to its scenic beauty and access to the nearby Tonto National Forest. Visitors can enjoy hiking, fishing, camping, kayaking, and other outdoor activities.
Despite its small size, Tonto Basin has several local businesses, including a grocery store, gas station, restaurants, and several specialty shops. The village also hosts community events such as the Tonto Basin Chamber of Commerce's annual Spring Fling and the Tonto Basin Firefighter Association's annual Labor Day Weekend Fish Fry.
