It was the spring of 2007 and I was about 1 year into my first sea going squadron. I spent the last two years bouncing around San Diego, chasing roommates who could share the cost of living. I lived in every part of town from Escondido to Paradise Hills. I packed light and tried to save money where I could. We were 3 months from the end of our lease in a 4 bed house when my roommates each decided they were going different directions. I had to find 3 replacements on short notice or pack up. I was out to sea...
I came back from deployment with a seabag, and the contents of one 5x10 room boxed up in the garage of a house I didn't live in anymore. I was done with roommates.
That following year, the housing market crashed...
I didn't know anything about buying a house, but I knew if I didn't get smart I would be searching for that next spare room. I bought a foreclosed property on a cul de sac, and never looked back.
I moved on to buy several other properties since then and found myself sharing my journey with everyone. I realized along the way that owning a home was more than just a stable living situation, but was an opportunity for long term wealth. After 11 years in the Navy I decided to take a chance and follow my passion. I became an agent and I do what I love.
When we bought that house, we locked in a payment that wouldn't go up. We found tax savings along the way, and when the opportunity came, we rented out some space to put some extra money away. We've watched rents rise like flood waters since then. I hear people say they can't afford to own a house. I couldn't afford not to.
