3 GENERATIONS OF PROBATE REAL ESTATE
My grandfather, Carl Redmond, was the first to get licensed in 1971. His goal, like many agents getting into real estate, was simply to sell his own home and maybe a couple of other deals here and there. My grandmother, Rosemarie, became interested in real estate watching and helping my grandfather flip houses.
In 1977 my grandmother found her passion! Rosemarie or Real Estate Rose, as her friends called her, started her real estate career with Don Tarbell, the founder of Tarbell Realty as a single agent. She was a single mother of six and had a heart for service and a way with people. My grandmother's home was always open, she was, as Dad would say, a Maven. She connected with people, she listened, and was never in real estate for the money. She was wildly successful in real estate, however, I believe that is because of her approach to it, she was there to help. Her standards were what everyone else would consider the extras.
In 1978 my father, Jerry, became licensed. He did so at the behest of my grandmother. He started as a solo agent working occasional transactions with my grandmother. My father was not thrilled about real estate at first. We joke that he was just following grandma's orders. You'll understand as you get to know our family, Grandma was in charge. It didn't take long for my Dad to find his knack in the data of real estate. Dad found deals in the data!
We often forget that it was not too long ago that Zillow didn't exist, that the internet didn't exist, that we didn't have tiny computers in our hands at all times. My father was intrigued by the massive amounts of data that were collected in a real estate transaction. He developed a system that allowed him to mine data for properties that were in need of being sold. Properties that he brought to investors as opportunities to buy and rent or buy and flip. My father sourced and managed the contractors. He managed the projects and would sell the property or hire the Property Management firm to take it over and maintain it. It was during this time that he was brought an interesting proposal.
Jim, a dear family friend of ours, had an out-of-state client he was representing in a probate matter. Jim asked Dad to handle the estate home. Dad had the experience and the network of contractors but not ALL the other pieces, YET.
Dad fumbled through that first probate as he didn't realize all the people he needed. There were collections of items that needed to be appraised and inventoried, repairs that needed to happen before the home could be sold, trash and debris that needed to be removed, and areas of the home that needed to be sanitized deep cleaned. It was madness but they got it done. This was when Dad realized his passion.
He became a resource to the legal community. He was able to assist attorneys with research and information. When families were referred to him, he and my grandmother would assist them every step of the way. They realized the easiest way to keep the probate case on track was to become the hub of the process.
Our family's approach to Probate is simple. We talk with you and listen. Based on our conversation we will help you and your family determine the best course of action and execute it. We maintain communication between the attorney, you, additional heirs if desired, service providers, vendors, and the courts when necessary.
