One historical anecdote from San Mateo, California is that in 1863, a wealthy businessman named Timothy Guy Phelps built a luxurious mansion in the city known as "The Villa." The mansion featured ornate architecture and beautiful gardens, and was a popular destination for social gatherings and events. However, in 1906, the mansion was severely damaged in the San Francisco earthquake and fire. Despite efforts to restore the building, it was ultimately torn down in 1941. Today, the site of the former mansion is a public park known as Central Park.
