Tehama County, located in the northern part of the Sacramento Valley in the great state of California, has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century. Established on April 9, 1856, the county was formed from parts of Colusa, Butte, and Shasta counties. It is named after the Tehama Native American tribe, who once inhabited the area.

The area was initially explored by Spaniards in the early 1800s but the settlement of the county truly started during the California Gold Rush in the 1840s. At that time, many people migrated to the region in search of gold and opportunities, which led to a significant increase in population and growth. This, in turn, resulted in the establishment of new towns like Red Bluff, which would later become the county seat.

Over the years, Tehama County has been primarily known for its agricultural and natural resources. The region is widely recognized for its walnut and olive orchards, cattle and sheep ranches, as well as lumber production through its expansive forests.

A fun fact about Tehama County is that the famous outlaw, Charles "Black Bart" Boles, conducted his last stagecoach robbery in the region in 1883. He was eventually captured, and his poetry-filled notes provided to authorities throughout his crime spree earned him literary fame. After serving time in San Quentin Prison, he was released and lived the rest of his life as a law-abiding citizen.
