Hydesville is a small village located in Humboldt County, California, in the United States. It was founded in 1861 and is named after George Hyde, who was a pioneer in the area. The village is best known for an event that occurred in 1848, when two young sisters, Kate and Margaret Fox, claimed to have communicated with the spirit of a murdered peddler through knocking sounds in their home. This event is considered the starting point of the Spiritualist movement, which became popular in the late 19th century. Today, Hydesville is still a small, rural community with a population of around 1,200 people.
