The original name of the place was "El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula," which was shortened to Los Angeles. Additionally, Los Angeles was founded in 1781 and became a part of Mexico in 1821 after gaining its independence from Spain. The city became a part of the United States in 1848 following the end of the Mexican-American War.
