The county was established on February 10, 1883, as a part of Colorado's rapid western expansion during the late 19th century. The county seat is situated in Glenwood Springs, a town famous for its hot springs and natural wonders.

Garfield County's early history is characterized by the presence of the Ute Native American tribe, who lived and hunted in the areas surrounding the Colorado River. The first European-American settlers were primarily involved in ranching, farming, and mining activities.
