Grand County is located in the north-central region of the great state of Colorado. Established on February 2, 1874, it was named after Grand Lake, which in turn was named in honor of the Grand River, now known as the Colorado River. Occupying an area of 1,870 square miles, the county has its administrative seat in the town of Hot Sulphur Springs.

The area now known as Grand County was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Ute and Arapaho. It wasn't until the mid-19th century that European American and white settlers began to explore the region, drawn to its breathtaking landscapes and the possibility of discovering gold and other natural resources. The first settlers established ranches, fur trading posts, and small communities.

With the development of railroads in the 20th century, Grand County became more accessible to visitors, leading to a growing tourism industry. Many travelers came to enjoy the natural beauty of the region, including Rocky Mountain National Park, Arapaho National Recreation Area, and the various rivers and lakes.

A fun fact about Grand County is that it is home to the headwaters of the Colorado River, which starts in the Never Summer Mountains within the expanses of the Rocky Mountain National Park. This river plays a significant role in providing water to seven US states and Mexico.
