Kit Carson County, named after the frontiersman and explorer Christopher "Kit" Carson, was established on April 11, 1889, in the eastern part of the great state of Colorado. The county's main economy was primarily based on agriculture, including the production of wheat, corn, and sugar beets, as well as raising cattle.
The county seat is Burlington, which was founded in 1887 by a group of settlers from Iowa. Early towns in the region were Old Burlington (now Bethune) and Stratton. The completion of the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad in 1888 provided easier access to markets and increased the growth of the county's population and development.
A fun fact about Kit Carson County is that it is home to the historic Kit Carson County Carousel. This carousel, also known as Carousel #6, was built in 1905 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company for Elitch Gardens in Denver, Colorado. In 1928, the carousel was moved to Burlington and today is one of only a few remaining fully operational antique wooden carousels in the United States. With its intricately hand-carved wooden animals and original Wurlitzer band organ, the Kit Carson County Carousel has drawn visitors from across the country for generations, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the past.
