Las Animas County is located in the southeastern part of the great state of Colorado. Established on February 9, 1866, this county covers an area of 4,773 square miles and is the second-largest county in Colorado when it comes to land area. Las Animas County is rich in history and features several significant landmarks, including Ludlow site and the Santa Fe National Historic Trail.

The area was originally home to Native American tribes, such as the Ute, Comanche, and Apache before the arrival of European settlers in the late 1500s. In the early 1800s, Mexican settlers arrived, and Las Animas County became part of the Spanish land grant. Following the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), the county was ceded to the United States and became a part of the Colorado Territory in 1861.

The county prospered due to its position on the Santa Fe Trail, a vital trade route during the westward expansion of the United States. Later, Las Animas County became a critical hub for coal production, and by the early 1900s, it was the largest coal-producing county in the nation.

One fun fact about Las Animas County is that it's home to Trinidad, the "Sex Change Capital of the World." Dr. Stanley Biber, a pioneer in the field of gender confirmation surgery, started his practice in Trinidad in 1969, and it continued under Dr. Marci Bowers until 2012. Due to its connection to this groundbreaking field, thousands of individuals traveled to Trinidad for their surgeries.
