Mesa County, located in the western part of the great state of Colorado, was established on February 14, 1883. It was named after the many mesas (flat-topped mountains) found in the area, including the largest flat-topped mountain in the world, Grand Mesa. The county comprises a total area of 3,341 square miles (8,653 km), with its county seat in the city of Grand Junction.

The region was initially inhabited by several indigenous tribes, including the Ute, Navajo, and Fremont peoples. It wasn't until the mid-19th century that European-American settlers began exploring the area. In the 1880s, the arrival of the railroad and the discovery of valuable mineral resources like silver and copper spurred rapid growth in the area, attracting various industries and families.

The official establishment of Mesa County in 1883 marked a turning point, as it allowed for the better organization of community resources and services. The region's economy has been driven by agriculture, mining, oil and gas extraction, and tourism, all of which continue to have a significant impact.

One fun fact about Mesa County is that it is home to Colorado National Monument, a stunning geological wonder with red sandstone canyons, towering monoliths, and various plant and animal species. This federal park, established in 1911, offers breathtaking views and various recreational opportunities, including hiking, biking, and camping, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts.
