Montezuma County, Colorado

Montezuma County is located in the southwestern part of the great state of Colorado. Named after the famous Aztec emperor Moctezuma II, Montezuma County was established on April 16, 1889, setting itself apart from the western portion of La Plata County. The county has a rich Native American history and encompasses diverse archaeological sites, including the well-preserved Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Ancestral Puebloans, who inhabited the region over 1,400 years ago, left a lasting cultural impact on Montezuma County. The Native American Ute tribe also has historical ties to the area, dating back to the 13th century. As the years progressed, European exploration and settlement began to take shape during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The population grew further in the late 19th century due to the discovery of gold and silver, followed by the expansion of the railroad system.
Fun fact: Montezuma County is home to an exceptional example of historical engineering known as the "Hovenweep Castle." This ancient Puebloan marvel is believed to have been a ceremonial or storage structure and is famous for its precariously balanced large stones that have baffled archaeologists for years.
