Ouray County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Colorado, named after the famous Ute Indian Chief Ouray. Established on January 18, 1877, Ouray County has a rich history that spans mining, ranching, and Native American heritage.
The area was initially inhabited by the Ute tribe, who found the region to be resourceful due to its hot springs and ample hunting grounds. As early as the 16th century, the Spaniards explored the area searching for gold and silver. In the mid-1860s, white settlers in search for minerals began to arrive, leading to tensions with the Ute tribe, who later agreed to leave the land in the 1880s.
In 1875, placer mining began in the Uncompahgre River near what is now Ouray City. This marked the beginning of a mining boom in the area, with silver, lead, zinc, and gold being extracted from various mines. The town of Ouray was established in 1876, and the following year, Ouray County was formed out of parts of San Juan and Hinsdale counties.
With the development of mining, transportation was crucial for the area's growth. In 1887, the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad reached Ouray and contributed to its development. At the same time, ranching grew in popularity in the region.
Today, Ouray County thrives on tourism, with the city of Ouray being nicknamed the "Switzerland of America" due to its beautiful mountain scenery. The county is also renowned for its outdoor activities such as ice climbing, hot springs, jeep tours and adventures, hiking trails, and an array of festivals and events throughout the year.
Fun Fact: Ouray is home to the world's first ice climbing park - the Ouray Ice Park, which draws climbers from around the globe to enjoy this unique experience.
