Pitkin County, situated in the central Rocky Mountains of Colorado, was established on February 23, 1881. Named after Colorado's second governor, Frederick W. Pitkin, it covers an area of approximately 973 square miles. The county has a rich history connected to mining, as it was an integral part of the Colorado Silver Boom period in the late 19th century. The town of Aspen, which serves as the county seat, was initially founded as a mining camp called Ute City.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Pitkin County's economy revolved primarily around silver mining. However, after the decline of the mining industry, the economy shifted towards a focus on outdoor recreation and tourism. This transition was marked by Aspen's development as an internationally renowned ski resort destination, making the county famous for its skiing and outdoor activities.

A fun fact about Pitkin County is that it houses one of the highest municipalities in the United States, the historic ghost town of Independence. Situated at an elevation of 10,830 feet, Independence was a flourishing mining town during the 1880s but was eventually abandoned as mining opportunities dwindled and the harsh weather conditions made it difficult for residents to sustain a living. Today, it serves as a heritage site that offers a unique glimpse into Colorado's storied past.
