Sedgwick County is located in the northeastern corner of the great state of Colorado. Established on April 9, 1889, the county was named after General John Sedgwick, a Union Army officer during the American Civil War who was admired for his leadership, courage, and dedication to duty. The county has a land area of 549 square miles and includes the towns of Sedgwick, Ovid, and Julesburg, which serves as the county seat.

While Sedgwick County's economy historically centered on agriculture and livestock, the construction of the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern railroads played an important role in shaping the area, causing population growth and allowing goods to be transported more easily. The county's unique location, sharing borders with both Nebraska and Wyoming, has also contributed to its regional significance.

Fun fact: Pony Express riders often passed through what is now Sedgwick County during their journeys. The town of Julesburg actually played an essential role as a station on the famous Pony Express route, creating strong links to the county's identity in the era of westward expansion and pivotal moments in American history.
