New London County is a beautiful region located in the southeastern corner of the great state of Connecticut. Established in 1666 as one of the first four original counties in Connecticut, New London County played a significant role in the early history of the United States. Its position along the shoreline of Long Island Sound made it an important center for maritime trade and military purposes.

New London County's history is rich, dating back to the indigenous Pequot and Mohegan tribes who inhabited the area before the arrival of European settlers. The county was home to some major battles during the Pequot War in the 1630s, including the Battle of Mystic which saw English settlers defeating the Pequot tribe.

In 1658, John Winthrop Jr. founded the city of New London, which would later become the county's namesake. The county prospered during the 18th and 19th centuries, with shipbuilding and whaling industries serving as economic drivers. The region's strategic maritime location also made it a popular site for shipyards and navy bases.

New London County has a strong connection to the American Revolutionary War. Benedict Arnold, the infamous traitor, led British forces in an attack on the city of New London in 1781, and along the way, burned down most of the buildings in the settlement. This event is now known as the "Burning of New London."

Today, the county boasts picturesque landscapes, historic sites, and vibrant cultural attractions. One fun fact about this region is that it is home to the United States Coast Guard Academy, located in the city of New London. Established in 1876, the Academy is one of the country's five service academies and prepares future leaders for the U.S. Coast Guard.
