- Windsor was the first English settlement in Connecticut and the oldest town in the state, founded in 1633 by a group of Puritans led by Reverend John Warham.
- The famous American author Mark Twain (real name Samuel Clemens) and his wife, Olivia Langdon Clemens, lived in a home called "Nook Farm" in neighboring Hartford, but they spent a lot of time in Windsor and were good friends with many of the town's residents.
