One major historical event that took place in Stamford, Connecticut was the Battle of Stamford in 1779 during the American Revolution. British troops led by General William Tryon attacked the town and burned many homes and public buildings. The Patriots fought back, and despite being outnumbered and outgunned, were able to hold off the British for several hours before ultimately surrendering. The battle lasted for about three hours and resulted in the loss of many buildings and lives on both sides. It is considered a significant event in Stamford's history and is commemorated with a historical marker at the site of the battle.
