Bay County, situated in the northwestern region of Florida, is part of the Panama City, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was founded on April 24, 1913, and named after St. Andrews Bay, a significant body of water in the area. The county's largest city is Panama City, which also serves as the county seat.

The land that now comprises Bay County was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Muscogee (Creek) and the Seminole. European exploration started in the 16th century when Spanish explorers arrived in search of gold and other valuables. The area was claimed by both Spain and Britain at various times during the 18th century before ultimately becoming part of the United States through the 1819 Adams-Onis Treaty.

During the early 20th century, the lumber and shipping industries played a crucial role in Bay County's economy. The completion of the Intracoastal Waterway in the 1930s provided improved trade connections, leading to the area's growth in population and development.

A fun fact about Bay County is that it is home to the Panama City Beach, featuring approximately 27 miles of white sandy beaches along the Gulf of Mexico. This popular tourist destination is well-known for its emerald-green waters and as "Wreck Capital of the South," attracting scuba diving enthusiasts from all over the country. The area is also famous for St. Andrews State Park, which provides a haven for water and nature enthusiasts alike.
