Columbia County, Florida

Columbia County, located in the great state of Florida, was established on February 4, 1832, and was named after Christopher Columbus. The county has a rich historical background. In the early times, it was inhabited by native tribes like the Timucua Indians before European settlers arrived.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, Spanish and English colonists occupied parts of the region. However, it was after the acquisition of Florida by the United States in 1821 that the settlement of this area accelerated. The county was formed from the Alachua and Duval counties as settlers moved in and took advantage of the fertile soil for cultivating cotton and tobacco.
The county seat, Lake City, was initially named Alligator in honor of a Seminole War chief named Halpatter Tuste-Nika, also known as Chief Alligator. It was later renamed in 1859 to reflect its newfound prominence as a major transportation hub in the area.
A fun fact about Columbia County revolves around the town of Fort White. Founded in the 1830s, Fort White was an important "Fort" during the Second Seminole War (1835-1842). The town saw incredible growth after phosphate deposits were discovered in the late 1800s, which enabled it to boom as a mining center. These days, Fort White is a picturesque, small town, and a popular spot for tourists exploring the Ichetucknee Springs State Park that provides tubing, snorkeling, and scuba diving in the crystal-clear waters of the Ichetucknee River.
