Flagler County, Florida
.Flagler County is a region in the northeastern part of the great state of Florida. Established on April 28, 1917, the county was formed from portions of St. Johns and Volusia Counties. Named after Henry Morrison Flagler, the founder of the Florida East Coast Railway and a key figure in the state's development during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Flagler County has a rich history deeply intertwined with the iconic railway system.
Flagler County's history dates back to the ancient Native American tribes, with the Timucua people as the earliest known inhabitants. Spanish settlers arrived in the area during the 16th century, and it was part of the Spanish territory known as East Florida. In the early 19th century, the region became part of the United States as a result of the Adams-Onis Treaty and subsequently served as a last stop for 19th-century farmers en route to the markets of St. Augustine.
The development of Flagler County accelerated in the early 20th century when Henry Flagler extended his Florida East Coast Railway tracks southward from St. Augustine, eventually reaching Key West in what was known as the Overseas Railroad. This railroad expansion played a significant role in establishing Flagler County as a major agricultural center, particularly in the cultivation of potatoes, cabbage, and other crops which were easily transported to northern markets via the railroad. The Flagler Beach, established in 1925, was another crucial milestone in the development of the region.
A fun fact about Flagler County is that it is home to the Princess Place Preserve, which features the oldest in-use homestead in Florida. This park, situated on 1500-acres of pristine Florida wilderness, houses Cherokee Grove Lodge, built-in 1888, and once served as a hunting retreat for a Russian prince. Today, the park offers camping, hiking trails, bird watching, and horseback riding for visitors interested in exploring the natural beauty of this charming part of Florida.
