Franklin County is situated in the northwestern part of the state of Florida, known as the Florida Panhandle. The county was established on February 8, 1832, and named in honor of Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States. The county seat is Apalachicola, a historic port city located along the Apalachicola River.

Franklin County played a substantial role in Florida's history. The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Muscogee and the Apalachee. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Len reportedly arrived in the area in 1528, marking the start of European presence. Throughout the colonial period, the region was under Spanish, then British, and finally Spanish control again before ultimately becoming part of the United States in 1821 through the Adams-Ons Treaty.

Since its earlier days, Franklin County relied on various industries for its economy, including lumber, seafood, tourism, and agriculture. The county gained prominence, particularly during the peak of the cotton trade in the 1800s, thanks to its strategic location along the Apalachicola River. This period also saw thriving maritime and timber industries.

Now, a fun fact about Franklin County: The John Gorrie Museum State Park in Apalachicola is dedicated to Dr. John Gorrie, an inventor, and scientist who invented mechanical cooling. He built a device to cool hospital rooms for patients suffering from yellow fever, a significant first step toward modern air conditioning. His achievement earned him the U.S. Patent for mechanical refrigeration in 1851.
