Levy County is located in North Central Florida and was created on March 10, 1845, from parts of Alachua County. It was named in honor of David Levy Yulee, a prominent Floridian who served as a territorial delegate to Congress and was instrumental in the state's admission to the Union in 1845. Yulee later became one of Florida's first U.S. Senators.

The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, specifically the Timucua and later the Seminole. European exploration began in the 16th century with the arrival of the Spanish, followed by the British and eventually American settlers.

Levy County's economy was primarily based on agriculture, with cotton, sugar, and citrus as the primary cash crops. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, timber and turpentine industries also played a significant role in the local economy. Additionally, the region has been known for its phosphate mining since the late 1800s.

Today, Levy County boasts a diverse economy with industries such as healthcare, retail, and tourism playing key roles. The county is also home to several nature preserves, including Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve and Goethe State Forest, which attract visitors interested in hiking, birdwatching, and other outdoor activities.
