Madison County is located in the northern part of Florida and is part of the Tallahassee Metropolitan Area. It was established on December 26, 1827, making it one of the five oldest counties in the state. The county was named after James Madison, the fourth President of the United States, who served from 1809 to 1817.
In the early years of Madison County, the area was inhabited primarily by Native American tribes, such as the Apalachee, Timucua, and Seminoles.
